What is PageRank? How is the importance of a page or a link determined?

With most search engines, the importance of a website increases with the number of other websites that link to it. But it is not only about the total number of incoming links. Links from important websites will give your site more importance and thus are more valuable.

PageRank is an algorithm used by Google, to determine the abovementioned importance of a webpage. Practically, it is represented by a number on a scale from 0 to 10. Higher PageRank = more important page.
PageRank is a trademark of Google, and is patented by Stanford University. More about PageRank on Google.com.

Pagerank is not the only ranking algorithm. All search engines must have one, in order to sort their results.
